ICON TODAY
International Humanistic School (MSH) and connected with it conference ICON TODAY want to pose a question on Byzantine’s tradition presence in current culture. Which elements of that tradition are or might be important for contemporaneity?
In that context appears question about the icon. Icon for many years has been attracting attention of scholars, theologians, Byzantine and culture researchers as well as artists and plenty of layman-admirers. In the last two decades in many countries of Europe and the world, also in Poland independently from Scientific Centers for Byzantine Researches arising courses and seminars about history and theology of icon painting, independently from art academies, workshops and courses of icon painting are being created. Also independently from scientific researches, popular science books about icons, manuals of icon-writing and icon painters statements are being published. Interest in icon on various culture levels and in diverse social and geographical circles, widely goes beyond frontiers of Byzantine-Ruthenian culture and Eastern Church’s rite. Contemporary icons more and more appear in churches of different denominations, in galleries and private apartments.
How far is interest on icon connected with discovering Byzantine tradition and spirituality of Eastern Church? Is increase of interest on icon just a transitory tendency or has a profounder ground and, if it is so, what sort of ground is it? What icon has to hand down to contemporary man? Does it have anything to communicate to a contemporary artist? What is the role of icon in the context of culture relationships between West and East?
Iconographical canon is inseparably connected with icon issue. What is the Byzantine understanding of icon canon? What is the relation between icon canon and modern paradigm of artistic freedom? Does canon have anything to offer for contemporary art?
Lot of these questions go beyond frontiers of particular science fields and by touching contemporaneity, get on ground of existential issues. Our purpose is to make the meeting point for scholars of various fields interested in the phenomenon of Icon - from historians and art historians through culture researchers to philosophers, theologians and artists working as icon writers. To participate in the conference we invited icon painting researchers representing various humanistic subjects and Icon-writer artist.
